SEPTEMBER 30, 2005

NEWS
Fall is upon us. We have a woman in the White House - at least on TV (If you haven't seen it, it is "Commander in Chief" on Tuesday evenings on ABC starring Geena Davies as the President). In the real world, however, there is still much to be done to promote women's equal leadership.
As Fifty/Fifty Leadership continues to grow we of course need volunteers of all stripes. So on Monday, September 26th we had a meeting - graciously hosted at the offices of Congresswoman Diane Watson - to bring together current Board members and those interested in the work of Fifty/Fifty Leadership. Amid the excitement we accomplished a few things -
As this is such serious business, we need to make sure we have fun, so Ellen Snortland, my Co-Chair, started the ball rolling by announcing that the co-chairs would be Grand Duchesses. This was then followed quickly by Annika Hylmo who has taken on the Vice Chair in charge of Leadership Circles. Her title is Head Goddess. Diana Davidson agreed to chair Membership and is our Membership Majesty.
We welcome attorney Mi Kim to the Board and her interest is in the Freedom Academy - perhaps she'll be the Liberty Leader!
Doctor Letitia Pinson wants to be involved and will help staff the table at the Gathering of Sisters - A Women's Fair which the Glendale Women's Commission is putting on October 29th.
Rosio Borroel is going to help out the Head Goddess with the Leadership Circles - particularly with the young Latina / Hispanic community.
Marlen Luna, soon to be an M.D., is leaving for New York shortly and has agreed to be on the Advisory Board while she is gone.
The rest of the attendees all have signed up to help out at events! Can't get better than 100% participation.
Our Advisory Board now spans 10 States (check the website to see which ones), Canada and Chile. Ellen has challenged us all to look through our contact lists and come up with people in the other 40 States that may be interested in being an Advisor. Let's see if we can complete this before the end of the year. Who do you know?
WEBSITE
In our last newsletter I reported that the website was about to go up. As you may know if you checked, it didn't happen until our newest Advisory Board member, Linda LaZar, came to the rescue! Within days, Linda had created the site and added many pages and offered many good suggestions.
So many thanks to Linda for an incredible job - and fast! If you need a website or know someone who does, I recommend getting in touch with Linda at www.oregonbusinessweb.com or email her at LindaLaZar@comcast.net
Click on our website now: www.Fifty/Fifty.us Then bookmark it and check it often as we will be adding to it as we progress. Also, if there is something you would like to see on the website or have something you think should be added, please let us know.
From this week's meeting, we have had the suggestion to have a Spanish version - and perhaps other languages also. Anyone willing to help with the translation, please let me know.
FUNDRAISING
You will notice on our website that there are some great ways you can help Fifty/Fifty Leadership. With the holidays coming up, like you, I will be buying gifts. If you will be doing any shopping online, you can do so AND help Fifty/Fifty - without it costing you anything.
FundIt.org is a website that has made agreements with many stores - such as Macy's, 800Flowers, KB Toys, Target, Lane Bryant, GiftBaskets.com and many more. When you shop online, specifying Fifty/Fifty Leadership, for everything you buy there will be a percentage that comes back to Fifty/Fifty Leadership. So, just click here: http://www.Fifty/Fifty.us/Products.htm and start shopping!
Another great gift idea if you are in the Los Angeles area is the Entertainment Book . This is a book of coupons that give you 2-for-1 dining at fine restaurants, chains, and fast food, discounts for the movies, $72 savings over the year for doing your grocery shopping at Ralphs, hotel discounts, concert discounts, sports events discounts.. And a whole lot more. The books retail for $30. We have them for $25 - so you save $5 by buying them from us! We have books that cover the following areas:
-
Greater Los Angeles, Long Beach and South Bay
-
San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys
-
San Gabriel Valley and Ontario / Claremont
We can arrange for pick-up or delivery, or for $2 more we will ship them to you.
Lastly - but definitely not least - Ellen's book, " Beauty Bites Beast: Awakening the Warrior in Women and Girls" is available on Amazon.com and we are now an affiliate, which means when you click from our website to buy the book, Amazon will send us a check. And - her book has just been launched in Spanish - "La Bella Muerda A La Bestia " and is also available through our site and Amazon.

We are a talented group and are doing many things. Please let us hear from you when you have an accomplishment or something you have taken on that is worth sharing.
We are still building both the Board of Trustees and Advisory Board, so if there is anyone you want to recommend, let us know. We need women and men who are concerned that there still is so much inequity in leadership - and want to do something about it.
Do you have a skill, a talent and want to make a difference? If you do, please call or email me. Whether you have one hour, one day or every evening to give, we need you.
As you can see from my limited creative skills, we need help putting together a more appealing newsletter. Can you help create a fun, appealing and interesting format? Let me know!
PROGRAMS
The programs currently in process are:
Leadership Circles
Leadership Circles are portable and affordable programs for the empowerment of women of all ages, races, ethnicities, socioeconomic standing and sexual orientation. It is a series of short-term and ongoing programs designed to bring out, nurture, and celebrate the natural leadership of every woman.
As well as the basic Circle, there will be specialty circles to attract and encourage women with different needs, capabilities and expectations. Circles will also be in different languages. Addition of each type of Circle will be driven by the needs of the membership and facilitated by Fifty/Fifty Leadership.
Freedom Academy
The Freedom Academy will bring 10 to 12 young women who have been identified as potential leaders of their communities in developing countries, to the United States for a year-long program to develop their leadership skills. The program is designed to be duplicated easily so that each year the graduates can go back to their home countries and develop, implement and lead projects designed to bring their homeland into line with the 8 Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.
